Dakar 2010: Stage Eight in Glorious Detail

I've been trying to keep my mouth shut and let Ben report the Dakar for you, but this stage was so exciting, I have to put in my two cents.  And now?  Now I'm most determined to get over there next year and cover the event in person.

After a day of rest (and several penalties issued), the Dakar 2010 resumed today -- Stage 8 -- a 472 km ride, 90 km of dunes and what sounds like 382 km of rocks.  Coma, who came in second, had to work hard to make up for his six hour penalty while Despres, with his 1.5 hr overall lead, could afford to take it easy and safe today.  The old guy, my beloved Ullevalseter, took the lead at the beginning and like a dog with a bone, wouldn't release it, taking his 2nd stage win.  (old guys rule!)  I'd love to see him win overall because I think this will be his last Dakar on two wheels.

The Rocks.  OK, so they were whining about the dunes, but it's the rocks that got everyone.  Tons of tire problems today.  Take a look at this shot of one of Despres tires.

Arredondo is out and Mirjam Pol is out, the first lady to withdraw.  Annie Seel had quite the adventure.  You absolutely must read here about it.  Go ahead. . . .I'll wait.  Seriously.  Seel abandoned her bike just seconds before it fell into an empty tomb.  It was lifted out and she proceeded to win the ladies cup on this stage anyway.  She's had a lot of fun stories on this Dakar, but, c'mon, tomb-raider?  Unbelievable.  I told you she's a machine.  She's determined to win this thing, and, apparently, have tons of fun on the way.

Tomorrow's stage has been shortened.  Also, it will be a "wave" start -- about 20 bikes off the stage at once.  I know.  Crazy.  See you there.
